How Do You Care for a Velvet Abaya?

To care for a velvet abaya, hang it on a padded hanger instead of folding it, lift creases with gentle steam rather than a hot iron pressed flat against the fabric, and brush the soft pile lightly in one direction to keep it even. Spot-clean little marks as soon as you see them, air the abaya out after wearing, and keep it away from direct heat and strong sunlight. Looked after this way, a velvet abaya holds its deep colour and soft feel for a long time.

Why velvet needs a little extra care

Velvet is not a flat fabric. It has a short, raised pile — tiny upright fibres that catch the light and give velvet its rich, soft look. That pile is also what makes velvet a little more delicate than a plain weave. Press it the wrong way and the fibres flatten; fold it hard and you get shiny crease lines. The good news is that velvet does not need anything complicated. A few simple habits keep it looking its best.

Hang it, don't fold it

Folding is the fastest way to crush velvet. Where a fold sits, the pile flattens and leaves a mark that can be hard to shift. Always hang a velvet abaya on a padded or wide hanger so the shoulders keep their shape and the fabric falls straight. Give it a little space in the wardrobe too — velvet pressed tightly between other clothes picks up flat patches over time.

How to get creases out of velvet

Steam is your best friend here, not a flat iron. Hang the abaya up and pass a garment steamer, or the steam from an iron held a few centimetres away, down the length of the fabric. The steam relaxes the fibres and lets the pile stand back up, and most creases simply drop out. Never press a hot iron flat onto velvet — it crushes the pile and can leave a permanent shiny patch. If you must use an iron, turn the abaya inside out, use the lowest steam setting, and keep the iron moving without pressing down.

Keep the pile soft and even

After steaming, you can gently lift the pile with a soft clothes brush, or even a clean, soft-bristled toothbrush for small areas. Always brush in one direction, following the way the pile naturally lies, using light strokes. This smooths out any fibres sitting the wrong way and brings back that even, velvety surface. A quick brush now and then also lifts off dust and lint.

Spot-cleaning and freshening between wears

You don't need to clean a velvet abaya after every wear. Most of the time, hanging it up to air out for a few hours keeps it fresh. For a small mark, act quickly: blot — don't rub — with a clean, slightly damp cloth, working from the outside of the mark inwards so it doesn't spread. Let it dry naturally, away from heaters and direct sun, then brush the pile back into place. For a deeper clean, take it to a professional cleaner and tell them it's velvet, rather than machine-washing it at home.

Storing a velvet abaya

If you're putting a velvet abaya away for a while, keep it on its hanger inside a breathable cotton garment bag — not a sealed plastic one, which traps moisture. Store it somewhere cool and dry, out of direct sunlight so the colour stays deep and true, and give it room to hang freely so nothing presses marks into the pile. A velvet piece looks its best in the cooler months, so it's an easy one to keep at the front of your wardrobe through winter and tuck away gently when the heat returns.

An easy velvet abaya to love

If you'd like a velvet abaya that's simple to style and simple to look after, the Trivelle Velvet Abaya is a lovely place to start. The soft velvet feels warm and looks quietly elegant, which makes it a natural choice for cooler evenings, dinners and winter occasions. It comes in black and navy — two deep, easy shades that pair with almost anything, from a simple sheila to gold or silver accessories. On busier daytime days you might rotate in a plain everyday piece like the Chinese Abaya and save your velvet one for the evenings when you want to feel a little more dressed up.
